Everything you need to navigate the upcoming Auto Reform changes with confidence.
What’s changing
Starting July 1, 2026, Ontario is introducing changes to the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), giving your clients more flexibility to tailor their auto insurance coverage. These changes apply to all new and existing customers, irrespective of renewal date.
No more one-size-fits-all coverage
Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits will remain mandatory, while all other accident benefits will become optional.
Auto insurance first
Auto insurance will become the first payor for medical or rehabilitation claims (except medication expenses).
New definition of covered persons
Optional accident benefits will only cover the named insured, their spouse, their dependants, and any listed drivers. Pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers are no longer eligible unless they fall into these categories.
