Reminder: Ontario driver licensing update and guidance for international drivers

August 19, 2026
Personal Lines

Before submitting applications for clients with international driving experience, take a moment to review Ontario's licensing changes and the resources available to support accurate data entry.

As a reminder, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) introduced changes on July 1, 2026, to how foreign driving experience is recognized for drivers from jurisdictions that do not have a reciprocal licensing agreement with Ontario.

Under these changes:

  • Drivers from non-reciprocal jurisdictions are limited to a maximum of 12 months of recognized foreign driving experience for licensing purposes.
  • These drivers must complete Ontario's graduated licensing requirements.

These regulatory amendments can be viewed at O. Reg. 185/26 DRIVERS' LICENCES | ontario.ca and O. Reg. 186/26 DRIVERS' LICENCES | ontario.ca.

Why it matters

These changes reflect the same principles that guide our approach to recognizing driver licensing history for rating purposes.

To support accurate data entry, especially for clients with out-of-province or international driving experience, please review our Auto Insurance Applications for International Drivers FAQ before submitting applications. Relevant guidance is also available in the manual on GoBroker.
