Auto theft remains a serious risk in Ontario, with high-value vehicles still targeted despite recent declines in some regions. Brokers play a key role in prevention—by reviewing client portfolios, sharing theft-prevention tips, and clarifying coverage.

Auto theft continues to pose a serious risk across Ontario, even as some regions report declining numbers. Together with our broker partners, we’re focused on helping clients safeguard their vehicles and stay ahead of emerging risks.

Top stolen vehicles in Ontario (2024)

According to the Équité Association, the most frequently stolen vehicles include:

  • 2021 Toyota RAV4
  • 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 Series
  • 2020 Honda CR-V
  • 2023 Ford F150 Series
  • 2020 Honda Civic
  • 2023 Jeep Wrangler
  • 2006 Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series
  • 2022 Toyota Hylander
  • 2024 Toyota Tundra
  • 2023 Lexus RX Series

While thefts in the GTA have dropped significantly in early 2025, organized crime remains active, and high-value vehicles are still being targeted for export and resale.

We all play a role in theft prevention

We encourage our broker partners to review client portfolios for high-risk vehicles, share theft-prevention tips such as using steering wheel locks, promote the installation of Tag Vehicle Tracking, clarify coverage details, and stay informed on local theft trends to keep clients aware.

“Auto theft is more than a nuisance—it’s a gateway to organized crime and a source of real distress for our customers,” says Mikael Honore, VP Claims Operations at Gore Mutual. “We’re committed to working with brokers to not only respond to claims but to prevent them. That starts with education, awareness, and strong partnerships.”
